FAQ
Collectors – starting out
I'm new to all this. What is an NFT?
An NFT, or non-fungible token, generally comes in two parts: a digital collectible (such as an artwork) and a unique digital certificate, registered on a blockchain, that records ownership of that asset.Think of an NFT as a way to prove that you own certain works in the digital economy.
Why should I buy a digital collectible?
People buy NFTs for lots of reasons. Some want to show off a one-of-a-kind digital collectible that they alone own. Some want to join a community of like-minded collectors. Some want to trade, gift or flip an NFT for a profit. Others may want to gain access to certain benefits or access privileges conferred to those who hold a specific NFT. Some want to support or "bet on" an emerging artist. And still others want to support a charitable cause or to be part of the next wave of Internet innovation.
What can I do with an NFT?
You can display an NFT online, on your phone or on your wall in a digital display. If it contains utility, you might gain access to special events, discounts or prizes. You can hold onto your NFT and hopefully watch it appreciate it over time. You can send your NFT to someone as a gift or trade it. You can sell your NFT on the secondary market. Basically, you can do whatever the accompanying NFT license allows.
What kinds of works can I purchase?
Tropical Arts caters to creators with high-quality handmade works. You’ll find 2D and 3D digital art, sculptures, photographs, music, videos, books, spoken word performances and more as we begin to support new media formats.
What are the rights and permissions that come with my NFT?
On each NFT detail page, you will see the type of NFT License the creator has attached to the NFT. That means you have full knowledge in advance of what you’re permitted to do with an NFT you buy on Tropical Arts. See our full list of NFT licenses.
What is a wallet?
Short answer: A wallet is where you keep your NFTs and any digital currency you have.
Longer answer: A wallet is a software application that serves as a blockchain-secured bank account for your cryptocurrencies and as a place where you can access your NFT assets, such as digital art.
On Tropical Arts, you can link multiple wallets to your account and show off all the NFTs you own on other blockchains.
Do I need a wallet to register?
No! Most marketplaces require a wallet before you can get started. At Tropical Arts, you can sign up by using your favorite social media account log-in or email address. We’ll create an Amberfi Verified Wallet for you that you can use at any time. If you’d prefer to sign up with an existing wallet, that’s fine, too. By the way, this is your own individual wallet to own and manage — Tropical Arts doesn’t manage custodial wallets on your behalf.
How do I register on Tropical Arts?
You can easily register for the marketplace by signing in with your email, social media account of choice or wallet (if you have one) in the upper right-hand corner of the marketplace. Here's a video explainer to show you how easy it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0NmQozbB8o
Should I be concerned about the scams that have happened in the crypto space?
You should absolutely be aware of what's happening in the space and find a platform that protects both buyers and sellers. At Tropical Arts, we protect the content and the transaction through encryption. We protect your wallet from phishing attacks. And if you buy from a seller with an Amberfi Verified checkmark, it means we have verified their identity.
Will my NFTs be secure?
Tropical Arts offers protection for your NFTs in several ways. We offer the option to encrypt the digital asset so it passes directly from seller to buyer. You're protected from phishing scams with your Amberfi Wallet, which requires you to consent to a transfer of funds or assets. And we offer legal protections as defined in the license that comes with each NFT.
How do you protect against fraud and piracy?
We use the Amberfi platform, which provides a high level of intellectual property protection through NFT encryption, seller verification, wallet security and other protective measures. We think it's important to provide both sellers and collectors with a trusted environment for transactions free from bad actors.
What are the fees?
We charge a 3.9% transaction fee to the buyer at the time of purchase similar to a PayPal or Stripe fee. (The fee covers the cost of marketplace curation, security, verification and community growth.) The seller also pays a 1% fee. By comparison, most highly curated sites charge a much higher fee: the NFT marketplace Sloika gets a 15% cut, Sotheby's 27% and Christie's gets a 30% commission from each sale.

All sales are final on digital works that are sold in the marketplace. If a physical work is attached to the NFT and it is not delivered, please contact the artist for fulfillment. ",run this past ward or the exec team
Do I need to pay taxes on NFTs I buy on Tropical Arts?

If you buy a physical work that accompanies your NFT, your shipping carrier may charge you an import duty.
What does it mean to buy an encrypted NFT?
When sellers encrypt their content, their high-fidelity image, video, 3D model or other digital content is made available only to the NFT buyer — making piracy less likely. When you acquire the NFT, you get the key to unencrypt it and then you're free to do what you want with the content within the scope of the NFT's license. (If you resell it later, it will need to be re-encrypted.)
Where are the NFTs that I buy actually stored?
When you buy an NFT on Tropical Arts, the accompanying digital work is natively hosted on NFT Storage by default — at no cost to the NFT holder. (You can check the details page of the NFT you want to purchase to see what storage they are using.) And, of course, you're free to copy the digital asset and store it wherever you'd like.

A work that you purchase on Tropical Arts can be sold to other collectors on the secondary market or on Tropical Arts itself. Keep in mind that the original license terms must be honored by the new buyer and the secondary marketplace must honor any conditions such as encryption.

I spotted some objectionable content on your site. Don't you curate?
It’s possible that you may come across some content you don’t like during a search on our marketplace because of its open, democratic nature. However, we hand-curate all works that appear on our home page and on major landing pages.
Can I use dark mode?
The Tropical Arts site hasn’t been tuned for dark mode yet, so we recommend you use light mode on your browser. We're working on it!
My session timed out. What gives?
Like all NFT marketplaces, Tropical Arts is dependent on outside partners such as blockchain node providers. If a certain action or transaction times out, it may need to be retried to complete, and you may need to sign in again if the web session's web3 provider has timed out from inactiving and this is impacting your user session.

How do I create an NFT?
To create an NFT, just head to tropicalarts.com/create and step through the simple process. Once you've drafted it, you can decide whether to mint it and show it off or list it for sale. Here's a quick video explainer on how to create an NFT.
Can I set my own price?
Yes, you set your own price on every work you create. Notably, you can list in US dollars so that the prices of your works do not fluctuate with the volatility of crypto. (If you set it at $100, the price remains at $100 until it’s sold or until you change it.) That’s a big difference from other marketplaces, where prices can swing wildly.
How should I price my NFTs?
Take a look at how similar works are priced — and what they’re selling for. Factor in your time, the cost of materials, and any perks or utility attached to your NFT, then set a price you’re comfortable with. We like the advice that bestselling artist Claire Silver offered on the Proof podcast: “Value your work at what you feel is good to let go of it for. Don’t undersell yourself, and don’t oversell yourself out of greed. It’s a difficult mark to land on, but think of a price that would make you feel good.

What are the fees?
There is no charge for creating your online marketplace. We also pay for your minting fees. We charge the buyer a 3.9% transaction fee when one of your NFTs is sold – similar to a PayPal or Stripe fee. (The fee covers the cost of marketplace curation, security, verification and community growth.) We also charge the seller a flat 1.0% fee. By comparison, most highly curated sites charge a much higher fee: the NFT marketplace Sloika gets a 15% cut and Christie's gets a 30% commission from each sale.

How will collectors find my works?
Collectors will find your works through browsing, search and word of mouth. We encourage creators to take the time to list your work with the relevant categories (including media type) and tags so that your work will show up in more places on the site. Creating sets, collections and galleries increases visibility, too. It also helps when you spread the word about your works on your own social accounts.

I create physical art. Can I use your marketplace?
Yes! In fact, Tropical Arts is one of the few marketplaces that support physical artists. Create an NFT of a painting, sculpture, bowl, etc. in a way that creates a digital certificate of authenticity and a digital version of the work. Gather information about the work's dimensions and weight before you begin.
Can I receive royalties for my work?
During the Create NFT process, go to the advanced settings and enter the percentage you'd like to receive on every resale of your work. You can add in collaborators as beneficiaries, too. Just keep in mind that the higher the royalty, the less likely you'll see resales of your work, so we recommend 3-5% as the optimal amount.
Can you guarantee that I receive royalties when my work sells?
On other marketplaces, it's up to the marketplace whether to enforce carry-forward royalties for creators. If you choose to encrypt your work on Tropical Arts, it means that if the buyer later chooses to resell the work, then the provisions of the original NFT must be enforced.
Which kind of media types and formats can I upload?
Tropical Arts supports dozens of media types, including all major image formats, video formats, music formats, book formats, audio formats and 3D modeling formats. You can upload almost any kind of format including images (PNG, JPG, JPEG, SVG, BMP, TIF), video and audio (MP4, MOV, WMV, ASF, AVI M2TS, MKV, WAV) and 3D models (FBX, GLB, glTF, STL, PLY). If you have a question about a file with an uncommon media format, contact us.
What blockchain does Tropical Arts use?

What are the gas fees and who pays for them?
Our technology partner Amberfi has agreed to pick up the cost of minting works on the Polygon blockchain for the foreseeable future. Just choose ""mint now"" during the listing process.
Will my profits from my NFT sale be taxed?
We do not withhold taxes from creators for their NFT sales. Payment of taxes to the proper authorities is the responsibility of each individual sellers, and it varies by jurisdiction. We do recommend that you keep track of your sales so that you provide your personal tax professional with the proper documentation at the end of the year.
How should I promote my NFTs?
Good question! The most successful NFT creators help promote their works after listing them. You'll want to spread the word on all of your social networks (Twitter, Facebook groups, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest) as well as any mailing list or blog you maintain for your followers. Share screenshots of the digital work along with a short description of what you've created and why. Don't forget to include relevant hashtags to help people find your post.
Can I split revenues with another artist or a co-creator?
You can easily share revenues (called “splits”) with another Amberfi Verified creator on the Tropical Arts marketplace on the final screen when creating your NFT. Just start typing in the Verified Creator's name and select from the dropdown list. You can also devote a share of proceeds with a nonprofit in the same way.
What is the difference between minting and listing my NFT?
After you've drafted your NFT, you have a choice of next steps. Most creators choose to list their work in the Tropical Arts marketplace for sale, either at a Buy now price or at Auction. If you do that, you can decide whether to mint it — that is, have it appear on a public blockchain — during the Listing process. You can choose to mint it yourself (Amberfi will pick up the cost) or leave it to the buyer to mint when purchasing it.
Separately, you may decide not to list the NFT for sale — at least, not right away. If so, you can mint your NFT and have it appear on your profile page. You can even share it on social media. But it won't have a price attached and won't be available for sale until you list it.
Can I draft an NFT or NFT collection before listing it?
Yes. Tropical Arts provides creators with a personal workspace for drafting NFTs, sets, collections and galleries before setting them live. Think of it as a sort of mini-Google Drive to manage your NFTs to give you time to organize collections and galleries, to add royalties before you mint or list, and so on.
What is minting?
Minting refers to creating an NFT and having it hosted in a smart contract on the blockchain.
What is listing?
When you've drafted an NFT and want to put it up for sale in the marketplace, just follow the steps on the Listing screen. You'll need to set the price, decide whether to put it up for auction or at a fixed price, add final details, check the preview — and list!
What is a 1 of 1?
A 1 of 1 is a distinctive digital work that is sold as a one-of-a-kind NFT rather than as part of a series, which may have multiple digital editions of the same work.
What is a drop?
An NFT drop refers to the release of a new NFT collection or project to the public in an NFT marketplace. Typically, a drop aspires to contain related works that attract more interest and higher prices than works released individually. A drop may take the form of an auction or of a collection of works released all at once with a ""buy now"" designation. with collectors bidding on dropped NFTs through an auction or buying them at a fixed price before they sell out. There may be emailed advertisements announcing the time, place and price of the upcoming NFTs to build an audience and potential customers. The term borrows from the idea of a brand “dropping” a new album or single. But unlike an album drop, every purchased NFT is unique.
Do you support drops?
Drops are coming soon.
I have purchased a painting wall print or physical work of art. Can I sell it as an NFT?
No. When you purchase a physical work, you do not acquire the copyright to the intellectual property. The only exceptions are if the work is in the public domain or if you have a signed assignment of rights from the creator.
How do I create a digital 3D version of a physical work?
There are many ways to do this. The reason creators choose to provide files like this is to: 1) Have a version of your work that has been scanned to prove authenticity and verify ownership. 2) Give the owner of your NFT an ability to bring your physical work into a game or metaverse and show it off in a new realm.
The easiet way to creat a file like this is to download a 3D scanning app like Polycam. You will be prompted to hold your phone in various positions where the camera on your phone will capture multiple images, from all angles of yor piece, in a variety of chosen rendering variencies that show structure and texture of your piece. It will take the images and composit them into a single 3D image, that you can also crop to your liking. You can export this file in many common file types. The most common is a .glb file, which can be imported into many common digital spaces.
How do I get my artwork, photos or music spotlighted?
Tropical Arts is open to all creators with ties to the Caribbean. Only a small percentage of these works can appear on the home page and key landing pages. But if you've uploaded something awesome that we may have missed, contact us at team@tropicalarts.com. And feel free to add your works to galleries along with other works with a similar vibe or theme.
